Tenor E. Mark Murphy has been hailed by the Boston Globe as “an eloquent
performer” and by the Sueddeutsches Zeitung (Muenchen, DE) as “wonderfully comic”.
Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, Mr. Murphy earned a Bachelor of Music from
Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master of Music degree from Boston
University. Teachers have included Dr. Mark Goodrich, Penelope Bitzas, Sylvia
Stone, Dr.Carolyn Hart, and Genevieve Halfyard. This up and coming character
tenor has performed such roles as Beppe in I Pagliacci (Cape Cod Opera),
Nathanael, Spalanzani, Pitichinaccio, Cochenille, and Franz in The Tales of
Hoffmann (Longwood Opera and Komische Kammeroper Muenchen), Remendado in Carmen
(Komische Kammeroper Muenchen), Goro in Madama Butterfly (Commonwealth Opera),
Monostatos in The Magic Flute (Maine Grand Opera), as well as several roles with
the Boston University Opera Programmes, including the gossip-mongering Don
Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro. A versatile actor, Mr. Murphy has successfully
performed the roles of Frosch, the inebriated jailer in Boston University’s
production of Die Fledermaus as well as the mute Toby in Intermezzo Chamber
Opera’s production of Menotti’s The Medium. Musical theatre and dance credits
include Edward Lyons in Blood Brothers, Freddy Hill in My Fair Lady, as well as
several character roles in The Nutcracker and La Fille Mal Gardee, both with
Kittiwake Dance Theatre. Although most at home in the character tenor repertoire,
E. Mark is a regular concert artist, performing tenor solos in such works as
Mozart’s Mass in C, Handel’s Messiah, and Haydn’s Creation with organizations
including the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Braintree Choral Society, I
Musici de Montreal, and the Orford Festival Orchestra. Solo recital venues have
included those in Canada, the United States and the Czech Republic. Mr. Murphy
was the only Canadian invited in 2004 to perform at Mlada Praha, the
international music festival held yearly in Prague, CZ. His attendance was made
possible in part by the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. Upcoming
engagements include Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins (Intermezzo Chamber Opera),
Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore (Raylynmor Opera), and Orff’s Carmina Burana (Braintree
Choral Society).|
